Jammu, September 1 (KNS) The Jammu division of Northern Railway collected Rs 56.46 lakh in fines from passengers during an intensive ticket-checking drive conducted across the division in August, officials said on Tuesday.
A total of 8,106 cases of ticketless and irregular travel, besides carrying unbooked excess luggage, were detected during the month-long drive, they said.
The railway authorities said Rs 56,46,615 was collected as fines from the offenders as per the rules.
The checking was carried out at major stations, including Jammu, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan, Kathua, Pathankot Cantt, Budgam and Srinagar, as well as on various Mail and Express trains and special trains passing through the Jammu division.

The drive was aimed at curbing ticketless travel and creating awareness among passengers about the need to carry valid tickets, officials said.
The Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu division, said the initiative was not aimed solely at revenue generation but also at ensuring passenger convenience and maintaining railway discipline.
The official said intensive ticket-checking drives would continue regularly and urged passengers to purchase proper tickets before commencing their journeys.
Railway authorities also appealed to passengers to cooperate with ticket-checking staff and avoid travelling without valid tickets.(KNS).
