Irfan Hafiz Lone Condemns Assassination of Iran Supreme Leader, Civilians

Srinagar, Mar 5 (KNS): Member Legislative Assembly and senior Congress leader Irfan Hafiz Lone condemned the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, civilians and school-going children, saying it was a “murder of humanity.”

In a statement issued to KNS, Lone said that India, being the oldest democracy, is enjoined by a moral and constitutional duty to uphold the principles of sovereignty, international law and peaceful resolution of disputes.

He said the BJP-led Government cannot act as a mute spectator and give tacit legitimacy to the brazen violation of international laws and internal sovereignty of Iran, a globally recognised state and founding member of the United Nations. Such an approach, he said, works towards weakening the global order and puts the sovereignty of a country at the dispensation of a powerful few, he said.

“If we actively or tacitly approve the treatment meted out to Iran, we lose moral standing to speak when it happens to any other state.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelOur country must have a consistent principled stand aligned with constitutional values and international laws,” Lone said.

The statement further reads: “The assassination of Syed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran and attack on school that resulted in heavy human loss deserves strong condemnation, not only because Iran has had very good relations with India but also because India is a responsible democratic nation.”

He said the Indian National Congress leadership has taken a principled stand and voiced concerns about the situation, adding that the Government of India led by the Bharatiya Janata Party must wake up and break the silence without any further delay.

Lone also requested the government to release the mourners who have been detained in the last few days and appealed to people to maintain calm and register their protest peacefully.(KNS)
