Handwara, Apr 17(KNS): Residents in several villages including Adura, Nogam, Lach, and neighboring areas of Mawer in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, express concerns about uncleaned drains and channels causing fear during the rainy season.

Locals claim that the Irrigation Department in Handwara and the Rural Development Department in Block Mawer have not cleaned the channels and drains under their jurisdiction in the past five years. Due to this neglect, the region is at risk of floods and other water-related disasters.

According to the locals, both departments receive funds for the maintenance and cleaning of rivers and drains every year, but the funds often lapse due to poor coordination. This has resulted in the people suffering for years and facing the risk of water entering their villages, causing havoc.

The villagers have appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara to intervene and ensure that the rivers and drains are cleaned immediately. They are concerned about their safety and well-being, especially during the upcoming monsoon season.

"It is imperative that the authorities take notice of this issue and take immediate action to address the concerns of the affected communities," the locals said.

"Neglecting this problem can lead to severe consequences, including loss of life and property damage," the locals said, adding that the people of Mawer deserve better infrastructure and protection from natural calamities, and it is the responsibility of the government to provide them with the same.(KNS)
