In a first, Kupwara sets up shelter homes for stranded border residents

Kupwara, Dec 14 (KNS): The district administration Kupwara this winter has decided to come up the temporary passenger shelters to accommodate stranded border residents as these areas remain cutoff from district headquarters due to heavy snowfall. 

An official told Kashmir News Service (KNS), that as a preparatory measure the administration has decided to establish shelter homes for the stranded passengers of border areas of Keran, Machil and Tangdhar.

He said that administration has identified GHSS Panzgam, GHS Meelyal and GHSS Kalaroos as temporary shelter homes and tehsildars of Kupwara and Kralpora have been appointed as nodal officers.

“Three employees including one cook for each temporary shelter home will also be deployed,” he said. 

The locals have welcomed the move, saying that it will bring some relief to border residents.  

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan said that besides other advanced measures for winter, this year they have decided to establish shelter homes for the stranded border residents.

She said that the administration has also established control rooms to meet any emergency situation. 

Notably, weekly helicopter service to these border areas at subsidised rates is also being provided for the convenience of the residents. (KNS)
