Forest dept begins distribution of 30,000 quintals of firewood to Mosques, Gurudwara's, other agencies in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 11 (KNS): Amidst severe chill across valley, the Forest Department on Wednesday said the distribution of firewood to Mosques, Gurudwaras and other government departments has been started from 5th November 2022.

It said over 30 thousand quintals of firewood have been transported from south, north and central parts of Kashmir which will be distributed among registered bodies.

Details accessed by Kashmir News Service (KNS), revealed that out of 30,049 quintal of firewood which have been dumped at P.C. Depot, 572 quintal have collected from north Kashmir, 5518 quintal from south Kashmir while 23,959 quintals have been collected from central Kashmir.

DFO Urban Forestry Division, Srinagar Abid Ahmad told Kashmir News Service (KNS), the department is committed to expedite the process of distribution of firewood to registered agencies and parties so that the process will be completed within a short span of time.

"Since the demand of latest heating gadgets have been increased for last several years, the demand for the firewood decreases," he said, adding that Masjids and Gurdwaras are among the main two higher priorities before the department.

Meanwhile, in southern Kashmir the forest department have a total target of 13000 quintal for distribution out of which 4783 quintal have been collected while in North Kashmir the total target is around 9000 quintal out of which 3822 quintal have been dumped so far.

Talking to conservator of south Kashmir forests, Irfan Ali Shah said that the firewood that is being collected for the local use to be distributed among registered consumers. "Since the new technology of heating system has emerged since last several years, the use of firewood demand during winter has decreased thus giving the relief to the forest department," he said, adding that solar technology has also played an important role in decreasing the demand of firewood.

Earlier, the department had informed all the registered agencies and Mosques of Srinagar district to approach the Range Officer, Timber Transport Range, P C Depot, Qamarwari from November 1 of 2022 with their indent through proper channel for issuance of yearly firewood quota. (KNS)
