Srinagar, Jul 22 (KNS): The University of Kashmir on Wednesday held the first meeting of its Students’ Council for the 2026 academic session, with Vice-Chancellor Prof Nilofer Khan describing class representatives as key partners in the institution’s growth and urging them to lead with responsibility.
The meeting, organised by the Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW) at Gandhi Bhawan, was attended by over 200 class representatives from teaching departments and satellite campuses. It provided a platform for direct engagement with the university leadership on issues related to student welfare, academic excellence, leadership, and campus development.
In her presidential address, Prof Khan called upon the representatives to uphold integrity, inclusiveness, empathy, discipline, and accountability while representing their peers. She encouraged them to act as ambassadors of positive change by promoting academic excellence, harmony, innovation, and constructive dialogue.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining an open and student-centric administration, assuring the representatives that their feedback and aspirations would continue to guide institutional efforts.
An interactive session followed, during which class representatives raised issues concerning academic facilities, hostel infrastructure, digital services, cultural and literary activities, sports, student support services, and overall campus life. The university leadership assured that genuine suggestions would receive due consideration.
Dean Students’ Welfare Prof Seema Singh said the department remains committed to creating opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom while nurturing leadership, creativity, and social responsibility.

Dean Academic Affairs Prof Pirzada Shariefuddin emphasised that academic excellence is best achieved when students actively engage in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. He called upon the class representatives to inspire greater student participation in cultural, literary, sports, and community engagement activities.
Registrar Prof Naseer Iqbal highlighted the importance of effective communication, mutual trust, and collaboration in strengthening the university’s academic and administrative ecosystem. He described the class representatives as an essential link between students and the administration.
Controller of Examinations Prof Majid Zaman Baba stressed the role of class representatives in nurturing academic responsibility and informed participation. He urged them to serve as dependable communication channels for timely dissemination of examination-related information.
The proceedings were moderated by University Cultural Officer Dr Shahid Ali Khan, who also proposed the vote of thanks.
The meeting ended with the screening of a documentary film by the EMRC, KU, showcasing the DSW’s initiatives in student welfare, cultural programmes, youth leadership, social outreach, scholarships, transport facilities for female students, and support for students with disabilities. The film also highlighted the university’s achievements at national platforms, including the National Youth Parliament Competition and youth festivals.(KNS)
