Srinagar, Dec 17 (KNS): Renowned writer and poet, Prof Ghulam Nabi Firaq (93) passed away on Saturday afternoon at his Nowshehra residence here.
He breathed his last around 12pm, said family sources.
Prof Firaq is a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for his works in Kashmiri literature. He is regarded as one of the very few people of Kashmir who has been trying to preserve the rich Kashmiri culture, heritage and language.
Born on 15 July 1922, as an educationist he had tried his best to reach all sections of society to help them in uplifting their educational standards.
His publications include Literary forms of East and West-A critical Analysis, The Individuality of Mahjoor’s Poetry and its impact on Modern Kashmiri Literature, The contribution of Mahjoor to Kashmiri Ghazal and The local Colour of Kashmiri Literature and its Significance.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condoled the demise of renowned poet, writer and author of many books, Prof. Ghulam Nabi Firaq who passed away today after prolonged illness.

She has prayed for peace to the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.
Minister for Finance, Labour & Employment and Culture, Dr Haseeb Drabu has condoled the demise of renowned poet, writer and author, Prof Ghulam Nabi Firaq who passed away today after prolonged illness.
In his message of condolence, Dr Drabu said Prof Firaq’s contribution in enriching Kashmir’s modern poetry would be remembered long.
He prayed for peace to the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.
Minister of Education, Naeem Akhtar has expressed grief on the demise Prof Firaq.
The Minister has termed demise of Prof Firaq as a major loss to Kashmir’s literary and education scene. While recalling his days at SP College, the Minister said that Firaq has remained his teacher and his teachings still hold a special place in his heart and also among thousands of other students.
He said Firaq’s death has left a huge void in the society which is difficult to fill. He has prayed to the Almighty to grant the deceased highest place in paradise and courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss. (KNS)
