Seeking inclusion of Punjabi as an official Language

Srinagar September 06:(KNS) All Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee meets Sh-KK Sharma Advisor to Lietaunt Governor J&K to discuss the recent Parliament Bill 2020. In a statement issued to KNS, reads the approved by Union Cabinet, in which the under stated languages (Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi and English) have been included as the official languages of Jammu & Kashmir, but unfortunately the Punjabi language has been excluded which is mother tongue and spoken by majority of Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims living in the UT, Punjabi language has been given the recognition and guarantee under Article 146, Schedule VI of the J&K Constitution, thus it becomes obligatory on the part of the J&K Government to make all the efforts for the promotion of Punjabi language in addition to other regional languages, Punjabi language was the only language which was being taught in the schools of J&K since very long and it was a compulsory subject upto classX,

Punjabi Language is one of the first language which was included in the 8th schedule of constitution.

Punjabi language which is in Gurmukhi script is used in all religious books and literature of Sikh history.

Punjabi was among the subjects which student should opt as his main subject and was having an option to use as his medium of writing other subjects like history or geography in his board level exams up to 1985.

There are thousands of students and teachers of Punjabi in almost all the schools, colleges and university of J&K UT.

According to survey the population of Sikhs in JK UT is near about 300000 and Punjabi is main language they speak and write.

According to Govt Order No.464-Edu of 2017 dated: 21-07-2017 sanction was hereby accorded to the inclusion of Punjabi language amongst the regional languages to be taught at secondary level in class 9th and 10th in all government and private recognized schools of the state.

This exclusion has deeply hurted the sentiments of the Punjabi speaking people which has made them feel isolated and cheated, Exclusion of Punjabi language as an official language is exclusion of Sikh community from UT of J&K

We strongly condemn this action and request for the immediate amendment to the notification for the inclusion of Punjabi language, this is the way to secure the rights of the minorities living in the UT of J&K.

It was assured by the Honorable Advisor to LG that the matter will be duly considered and appropriate action will be taken by the administration of J&K.
