Discussion held on issues of Insurance Coverage for Journalists, Establishment of Press Club

Baramulla, February 13 (KNS): Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Mohammad Aijaz Asad today convened an interactive session with the media persons in which prominent media persons from across the district participated. The session was conducted with the media fraternity to evoke feedback and suggestions on various development related aspects.

At the outset, District Information Officer Baramulla Mudassir Hussain gave a brief appraisal about the functioning and other related aspects.

Speaking on the occasion, DC observed that media has a very positive and constructive role in delivering good governance by projecting and highlighting various public issues appropriately. He said that journalism is a sensitive sector and there is a need to mantain its sanctity and uphold its objectivity.

Meanwhile, the representative of the press forum briefed the DC about the difficulties they are facing while covering events at ground level. They also put forth their demands which includes establishment of press club at district headquarter, accreditation of local journalists, streamlining of media  functioning. Moreover, they also demanded the upgradation of basic infrastructure in Information department for their convenience.

DC gave a patient hearing of all their demands and assured that their genuine demands shall be redressed on priority. He directed the DIO to mantain a close liason with the journalists besides termed them as a bridge between the administration and the people at large. He said that insurance coverage for all the media persons and establishment of press club shall be taken on priority.

Complimenting the media persons for expressing their positive gesture, DC added that maintaining the freedom of press is essentially important and urged upon them to strive for improving the standard of journalism by reporting objectively. He also said that media is a fourth  pillar in democracy and has to play an important role in delivery  of transparent and accountable governance to the people.(KNS)
