New Delhi, Aug 20 (KNS): The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of a bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, a move aimed at easing access to justice for residents of the strategically important Union Territory.
In a post on X, Amit Shah said the decision was taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of the PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, has decided to set up a bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir in Ladakh. This will significantly enhance access to justice for citizens living in remote areas of Ladakh by reducing the time required to avail themselves of the legal services they are entitled to," Shah wrote.

The home minister said the government remained fully committed to the all-round development of Ladakh and to ensuring constitutional safeguards for the region.
Officials said the new bench would save litigants from Ladakh the time and expense of travelling to the High Court's principal seats in Srinagar and Jammu. The Union Territory was carved out of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir following its reorganisation in August 2019.
The cabinet decision comes amid the government's broader push to strengthen judicial infrastructure in border regions and address long-standing demands from local bodies and bar associations in Ladakh. (KNS)
