Beginning of a New Era: JK participating with full vigour in the ongoing Suraj Kund Mela

Srinagar April 01 (KNS):  SurajKund International Craft Mela is the biggest Craft Mela in the country and world at large. The Mela showcases Crafts, Culture, Cuisines, Heritage and Folks from various regions of the country. Jammu & Kashmir is the theme after a gap of 22 years with Uzbekistan as partner country.

 Department of Handicrafts & Handloom organized a fashion show during the event by Zubair Kirmani, the Kashmiri fashion designer in the main chaupal area. which got an overwhelming response from the national, international delegates and dignitaries present on the occasion.

            “Fashion is a language which is understood world wide”, commented Zubair. The designer showcased the scope of how the traditional   textiles  crafts of Kashmir can be transformed into contemporary and modern look, paving a way  for a new beginning. The modifications, improvisations, training, individual and collective responsibilities on all fronts are required to bring the craft cottage sector to new heights.

            “A new epoch in the Handicrafts & Handloom sector is being seen with the initiatives by Director Handicrafts & Handloom Kashmir, Mr Mehmood Ahmad Shah”, commented one of the renowned exponents of Kashmir Crafts who was present in the show.

 Government is committed to make every effort to clear the inventory of the artisans which remained unsold due to covid   and provide direct market facilities to them. About 60 stalls have been allocated free of cost to the artisans of Jammu & Kashmir and huge sale is expected during the event.

According to an official from Handicraft and Handloom Dept in surajkund  this year during the past 10 days around 5 lac people have already visited the mela and focus being J&K.

the event is witnessing a large footfall especially in apna ghar of J&K, information Centre in the form of houseboat, the three entrance gates depicting Mubarak Mandi, Bachi darwaza and cheshmashahi . Shankrachariya Temple and Khankha of Shah I Hamdhan. The performing arenas and food courts are all adorned with paintings of J&k. cultural events  along with mouthwatering  cuisines of J&k are also popular among the visitors.(KNS)
