Awareness programme on breast cancer organised at GMC Baramulla

Baramulla, Oct 23 (KNS): An impressive Awareness programme on Breast Cancer was organised by department of Radiation Oncology Government Medical College Baramulla in connection with the international Breast Cancer awareness day.

As per a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Principal and Dean, Prof (Dr) Ruby Reshi, who was the Chief guest on the occasion, lauded the role of the department and said that she's keen to develop a full-fledged oncology unit at GMC Baramulla.

She expressed happiness for organizing such programmes and deliberated upon the importance of organizing such programs in the College and taking them out to the wider community covering remote areas and the adjoining catchment areas of the north Kashmir.

She expressed her resolve and commitment to make such awareness programs an important part of the college activities.

She also urged upon the audience to spread the awareness about National Cancer Control program and the facilities provided under the Ayushman Bharat SEHAT scheme wherein the health of the people is being given the top priority.

The principal also stressed the need of observing tobacco Control by proper implementation of COTPA Act regarding enforcement of tobacco laws.

Prof Lone M Maqbool, the organizing chairman and head of the department, stressed on more such awareness programmes stating that breast cancer has taken a lead and is the number one cancer seen in females in Kashmir.

He gave a detailed presentation on the patterns of cancer in Kashmir and said that GMC Baramulla has a potential to cater to a population of more than 32%( Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora) of the entire population of the valley and the burden of cancer in these districts is more than 26%.

“Thus there is an urgent need to develop a Comprehensive oncology center in North Kashmir.”

Prof Shad Salim expressed his happiness for organizing such programmes.

Others who delivered lectures included Dr Shad Salim Akhtar, prof Ab Majid, Dr Zahoor A Paul,Dr Asiya Hilal and Dr Mahmood Rashid.

The audience included a diverse gathering of female teachers, Social workers, Bank officers, Aanganwadi workers, Asha workers,nursing students and MBBS students.

At the end, there was an interactive session where audience interacted with the speakers and their queries were responded to by the panelists. The function ended with vote of thanks by Dr Asiya Hilal. (KNS)
