Kulgam, Sept 4 (KNS): In a major setback to fruit growers, more than 1,000 apple trees were washed away after the overflowing Vishow Nallah submerged large orchards in Laisoo Gudder area of Kulgam district.
Locals said heavy rains caused the nallah to breach its banks, flooding orchards and destroying standing apple trees. The incident has left growers distressed, as most families in the area depend entirely on apple farming for survival.
“This is our only livelihood. Losing so many trees overnight has devastated us,” said one of the affected orchardists, while urging the government for immediate relief.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Farmers said the losses will have long-term impact since newly planted trees take years to bear fruit. They appealed to the district administration to conduct a proper assessment and provide timely compensation.
Residents also urged Cabinet Minister Sakeena Masood to intervene personally and ensure adequate support. They demanded construction of a protection bund at Laisoo Gudder to prevent such damage in the future.(KNS)
