Srinagar, Aug 12 (KNS): The holy Chhari-Mubarak of Swami Amarnath was carried to the historic Shankaracharya Temple atop Gopadri Hills here on Wednesday as part of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra 2026, officials said.
The ritual, held on the occasion of 'Haryali-Amavasya' (Shravan Amavasya), was led by Mahant Deependra Giri Ji, who performed special prayers along with a group of sadhus. The ceremony lasted about 90 minutes, during which Vedic hymns were chanted and the atmosphere was charged with the sound of conch shells, they added.
Speaking to reporters, Mahant Deependra Giri said historians trace the temple's origin to King Sandiman (circa 2629–2564 BC). Originally known as Jyeshteshwara or Jyoteshwara, the temple later came to be called Shankaracharya Temple after Adi Guru Shankaracharya visited the site, he added.
The Chhari-Mubarak will be taken to the Sharika-Bhawani Temple at Hari Parvat, Srinagar, on Thursday (August 13) for further rituals, the Mahant said. (KNS)
