9th August 1953 marks New Delhi’s backtracking on convictions, commitments strengthening bonds of accession

Srinagar, 08 August:(KNS) Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Saturday said the unconstitutional dismissal and detention of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah in 1953 marked New Delhi’s backtracking of convictions and commitments strengthening the bonds of accession, saying the wide spread alienation in J&K is the ghastly fallout of the New Delhi’s indefensible, and undemocratic measures taken on 9th of August 1953.

Party’s Additional General Secretary Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamal while referring to the undemocratic dismissal of sher e Kashmir on the august 9th, 1953 said the contemporary scene in J&K is no different from that of 1953. “Now it is the third generation since then which is tasting the betrayal. Arbitrary removal of Sheikh sahib, a duly elected prime minister of the state in 1953 marked the erosion of mutual faith underlying the accession of the state with the union of India. The people of Kashmir were baffled and petrified by the colossal breach of trust on 9th of august 1953. Over half a century later New Delhi in spite of healing the old bruises, choose to inflict new ones. Half a century ago a New Delhi used “national interest” to denude J&k of its prized and unique character. Special status was incessantly encroached upon successively since then, and finally the incumbent ruling dispensation utilized the brazen camouflage of ‘development’ to shear J&k of its honor. Time, although proved that the measures that were taken on 9th of august 1953 didn’t prove any better for the national interests, as it stands out clear now that the measures undertaken on the 5th of August last year didn’t change the reality on ground either. Conversely, the measures have reversed what good was achieved by all the successive governments since 1996.”

In a statement to KNS, Kamal said that New Delhi has hammered down the mutual faith and trust between it and Srinagar to the lowest ebb by chopping the state into two halves and shearing it of its honor. “There can be no complete redemption unless J&k’s honor is restored back. The measures undertaken by New Delhi unilaterally and unconstitutionally have opened old sores. Far from winning the hearts and minds of the people of J&K, it has made the present generation taste the same betrayal. Unfortunately the situation is no different than what was in 1953,” he said.(KNS)
