Srinagar, July 11 (KNS): While expressing anguish over routine potable water scarcity in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, CPI(M) Secretary Ghulam Nabi Malik Saturday urged the authorities to take immediate steps to overcome the problem.

A large number of areas in Srinagar city, South and North Kashmir are reeling under acute water crisis for the last several months. Taps in several localities were running dry and women in particular were facing huge hardships due to water shortage.
Women have to go out of their homes to fetch water which is unfortunate. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, residents are facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to the damaged distribution system and worn out pipes.

Water shortage has even triggered protests in different parts of the valley. People have taken to streets, blocked roads, and raised slogans to attract the attention of the authorities towards their plight. CPI (M) stated in a statement issued to KNS.

For the last several months, reportedly more than two lakh people in Srinagar city are without adequate water supply after a breach in Malshai Bagh canal in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was reported in December. The concerned department must press in water tankers in these affected areas till the time final arrangements are done.

There are reports that some people were using tap water to irrigate their kitchen gardens is unfortunate. Strict action must be taken against such people, who deprive others of their water share in this hot summer (KNS)
