Water recharge pits, harvesting tanks, irrigation canals constructed to replenish groundwater at Kulgam

KULGAM, MARCH 01 (KNS): To replenish groundwater, 1300 water recharge pits, 556 water harvesting tanks and 163 irrigation canals were constructed under Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) at Kulgam.

This was revealed by Project Manager IWMP Kulgam, Mohammad Imran Khan.

 He said that under the conservation programme of natural water bodies various springs, gabion structures, check dams, percolation tanks were also covered under the programme.

Highlighting the importance of conservation of water bodies and harvesting of rainwater, the Project Manager said that the role of IWMP is of vital importance and they are redoubling their efforts in achieving desirable results.

He also stressed upon all the stakeholders to play a proactive role to conserve water and water resources besides making judicious use of water.

With regard to the expenses incurred so far under the programme, Khan said that an expenditure of Rs. 4.60 crore have been made in district under this centrally sponsored programme.

          Thousands of unemployed youth were benefited and got a chance to earn by involving in different work projects under the programme in the district, he informed.(KNS)
