Water paucity forces women to protest outside DC office Shopian

Srinagar, July 21 (KNS): Several women on Tuesday stage a protest demonstration outside Deputy Commissioner’s office Shopian against paucity of drinking water supply in the area.

According to reports reached to Kashmir News Service (KNS), large number of women with empty vessels blocked the road outside District Development Office in south Kashmir’s Shopian district for not getting adequate supply of drinking water in the area.

Protestors hailing from Pinjoora and adjoining areas said that the area is getting contaminated water from several months, despite repeated pleas to concerned authorities. They said it has become a routine for them to consume muddy water from nallah which led to emergence of several disease in the area.

Protesting women told KNS that they are compelled to fetch drinking water from far flung areas for their daily needs. They added the exercise has become a cumbersome for concerned villages but unfortunately authorities are not ready to address our genuine concerns.

“The paucity of drinking water supply issue is not afresh but it exists from past three decades.

Though several politicians and officials promised the concerned population but nothing has been done so far”, protesting women said.
However several officials of the administration rushed to the spot and pacified the protesting women.

“District Development Commissioner Shopian as taken note of the protest and directed concerned department to ensure drinking water supply to the concerned villagers”, an official said. (KNS)
