Wanpora Batmaran Village of Shopian Where People Drink Dirty Water, Officials Unmoved

Shopian July 23 (KNS): Inhabitants of Wanpora Batmaran Shopian on Thursday appealed higher Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu to ensure drinking water supply in the area as habitants are compelled to fetch dirty water from nearby Nallah’s to meet their demands.
According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), hundreds of villagers staged a protest demonstration against Public Health Engineering (Jal Shakti Department) and appealed authorities to provide them adequate drinking water supply. Protestors who were raising slogans against the concerned department, alleged that the villagers use dirty water of nearby Nallah’s since decades which led emergence of several viral diseases in the area.
They said on several occasions deadliest diseases broke out in the area due to continuous use of polluted water. Consisting thousands of population, locals said the nearby Nallah’s have got badly affected by drainage waste which has proved health hazardous now.
It is to mention here that there is no water filtration plant in nearby area which could have provided some relief to the local population. Locals alleged that departmental apathy towards the villages is unimaginable as underground water pipes have broken at several locations which led to shortage of drinking water supply in several areas.
“Water Filtration Plant (WFP) had been sanctioned for the village but due to official apathy, the project has been left unattended”, Javed Ahamd a local told KNS.
Locals appealed Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu to look into the decades lingering matter to end the miseries of local population.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian Chowdhary Mohammad Yasin told KNS that in wake of Covid-19 outbreak, it is impossible to take up the work on WFP, however he maintained that administration is on toe to provide enough water supply to every household. (KNS)
