SKUAST: Kashmir Celebrates World Rabies Day

 

Srinagar September 28:(KNS) World Rabies Day (WRD) is celebrated across the globe annually on 28th September to initiate action and raise awareness for rabies prevention. It is an opportunity to fight and add voice and concerns to thousands of others who are working in achieving elimination of this transboundary disease. Joining the global efforts and “United against Rabies” initiative of world health bodies, Directorate of Extension, SKUAST Kashmir celebrated WRD -2020 from September 9 to 28, 2020. The events organized included online Photo-, Painting- and Quiz-competitions besides promoting public awareness through physical and virtual campaigns. Relevant literature was also distributed for wider readership and information dissemination. Multiple organizations, scientists, research scholars, students, child/mother health care workers etc from national and international levels took part in the events. 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions were secured by Safiya Akthar/Maleeha Muneer, Mohini Sharma, and Khushboo Naqati in painting competition; Moneesh Thakur, SDVH, and Ishtiyaq Ahmed in photo competition; and Syed Arshad Hussain, Hasseb Saqib and Phoebe Lalremruati in quiz competition. The events were sponsored by Virbac and Intas Veterinary Pharmaceuticals. Prof. Nazeer Ahmed, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SKUAST Kashmir in his congratulatory message appreciated the efforts of organizers for promoting community awareness against this zoonotic disease. He expressed his commitment in extending all possible support to the concerned agencies working for stray dog population control. He also congratulated the award winning participants. Prof. Mushtaq Ahmed, Director Extension/Research of the varsity lauded the 3 – week long exercise of the organizers. He stressed on strengthening of linkage with all stakeholders for fighting this highly fatal disease. He praised print media for its role in public awareness. Prof. M A Paul, Dean Veterinary Faculty emphasized on the importance of waste management and dog vaccination in achieving zero human deaths by 2030. Prof. M S Mir, Associate Director Extension (Animal Sciences) thanked the varsity authorities for their support in making this offline and online awareness campaign a grand success. He appreciated Prof Massarat, Dr Nasir A Dar, Dr Malik Raies and Dr Mir Nadeem for their support. He thanked all the participants for making this program a meaningful one. He congratulated the event organizers Dr Aijaz A Dar and Dr Nazir Ahmed, Veterinary Scientists, Directorate of Extension for this mega event and wished them best in their future endeavours.(KNS)
