SKUAST - Kashmir conducts “World Food Day” related webinar

Srinagar October 16:(KNS) World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO in an exceptional moment due to COVID – 19 pandemic which is believed to add 83-132 million people to existing 690 million hungry people depending on the economic growth scenario. Hunger eradication is among the biggest global challenges today and a prerequisite for sustainable development. Livestock sector has the potential to address this challenge by promoting food security and nutrition, sustained economic growth and inclusive social development, all while using the natural resources efficiently. Joining the World Food Day – 2020 celebrations across the globe, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kulgam in collaboration with Directorate of Extension, SKUAST - Kashmir organized a webinar on “Matching sheep genetic resources with production system – Kashmir perspective” on 15th October, 2020. The webinar was attended by scientists from national and international level, officers of Sheep Husbandry department Kashmir, scholars and students. Dr Tasneem Mubarak, Head of the Kendra welcomed the participants. Prof M A Paul, Dean Veterinary Faculty threw light on historical aspects and current situation of sheep husbandry in J&K. Prof Mushtaq Ahmed, Director Extension/Research and the chief guest of the event pointed out research gaps and way forward for making the sector a profitable one. He also highlighted the importance of livestock sector in general and small ruminants in particular in alleviating the hunger. Invited speakers Prof Tasleem A S Ganai, Ex Director Education, SKUAST Jammu and Dr Javid A Khan, Ex Director, Sheep Husbandry Kashmir deliberated upon the sheep breeding goals, and survival and revival issues of the sector. A healthy interaction enlightened the participants about challenges and opportunities in sheep husbandry in Kashmir especially in view of the ongoing pandemic. Prof Safeer Aalam, Head, Animal Genetics and Breeding, and Prof Masood S Mir, Associate Director Extension (Animal Sciences) in their remarks highlighted the potential of sheep husbandry in employment generation, and nutritional security of the people. Dr Aijaz A Dar, Assistant Professor (Veterinary Medicine), DoE moderated the technical sessions. Dr Shabir A Mir, Program Assistant (Computers) KVK Kulgam presented the note of thanks.(KNS)
