Srinagar 26 June (KNS): Mayoral election on July 14 will see for the first time the arch-rival politicians Sheikh Mohammad Imran and Junaid Azim Mattu coming face-to-face in electoral competition, however, the support of the 42 councillors who removed the ex-mayor and later formed an ‘anti-corruption’ front to the former deputy Mayor, Sheikh Mohammad Imran, a prominent leader, leaving the results one-sided. Despite enjoying the support, the former deputy Mayor is inviting other councillors to join the anti-corruption camp to clean Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the corrupt people and work together for the better future of Srinagar city.
Sheikh Mohammad Imran, the councillor from Nishat invites all the councillors irrespective of the party lines to join the anti-corruption movement to work together for the bright future of the Srinagar city.
According to the statement given to the media, Councillor Waheed Dar says, “We want to make the anti-corruption movement broad-based and for that purpose, we invite all the councillors to join the movement. There are no camps in this movement. It is a movement towards transparency, accountability and good governance”.
Sources told the Newsletter that it is Waheed Dar, Corporator from Zakura who started an “Anti-corruption movement” in SMC and requested councillors to join the movement. He also convinced the former deputy-Mayor who later joined the movement.
The first leg of the anti-corruption movement was to outset the former Mayor for his corrupt and arrogant behaviour. The next step will be electing the right candidate for the chair of Mayor who will uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance of the movement.
It was Waheed Dar who proposed the no-confidence motion against the former Mayor, Junaid Mattu and it was supported by councillors irrespective of the party lines.
While speaking to the Newsletter, Imran said, “It is the time for all the councillors to come together and kill the menace of corruption. In our religion, corruption is a big sin. I am making efforts along with the support of like-minded councillors to make SMC corruption-free.” He further added that if the councillors belonging to the former Mayor, Junaid Mattu’s Camp are ready to work for the bright future of SMC, they are invited whole-heartedly to join the movement and make SMC corruption-free. “If Mayor or deputy Mayor in future shows no respect for the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance a vote of no-confidence motion can be passed anytime by the councillor’s after six months”, he added.(KNS)
