Police Foils 8th Muharram Procession in Central Kashmir's Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 17(KNS): Security forces on Tuesday used force to foil the attempt of people to take out the traditional eighth day of Muharram procession in several areas of Central kashmir's Srinagar city.

Eye witnesses told Kashmir news service (KNS), that hundreds of people assembled at Dalgate and they tried to take out a procession to mark the eighth day of the 10-day Muharram mourning period. They said that the cops, who were deployed in strength, resorted to tear smoke shelling which led to complete chaos.

"After lobbing tear smoke shells, the cops chased the mourners and pushed them back and detained several youths, " they said, adding that the police action was unwarranted and uncalled for, as the mourners were moving peacefully there.

Similarly, Police also detained a few Shia mourners at Jehangir Chowk in the city as they tried to take out a procession to mark the eighth day of the 10-day Muharram mourning period.

Earlier today morning in view of Muharram procession, the restrictions were imposed by authorities in several city areas including the commercial hub Lal Chowk and its other adjoining areas.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar said the decision to disallow Muharram processions at several places was taken to “defeat the ill designs of vested interests” who try to disturb peace.“We respect the religious sentiments and practices of all,” IGP Kashmir said in a tweet.

“But at the same time it is also our joint responsibility to defeat the ill designs of vested interest who try to disturb peaceful atmosphere,” Kumar said.(KNS).
