Police books, arrests several youth in Srinagar after indulging in chanting pro-Azadi slogans during Muharram procession


Srinagar, Aug 26 (KNS): Police on Wednesday took strong note of Azadi slogans raised during Moharram procession in Srinagar outskirts and booked several youth under “sedition” law among few have been arrested. However police spokesperson has added that such activities in the garb of religious procession won’t be tolerated and soon more youth who found involved in chanting slogans of Azadi will be apprehended.
According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Police Station Parimpora has taken strong cognizance of a video surfaced on social media in which mourners were found chanting pro-Azadi slogans in a Jaloos-e-Aza (Muharram procession).
“The police has acted swiftly and identified the location which is situated at the end of Hokersar Nowpora Bund, about 2.5 km’s inside the Hokersar road. The area is isolated and there was no history of organizing any such unlawful gathering before, neither was there input of any gathering/procession nor was there any police presence, as the area is far from main Imambara ( which is on the bund of Hokersar lake)”, police spokesperson said.
He said that it has been revealed that some boys from adjoining areas of Budgam led by Sajad Hussain Parray son of Mohammad Yousuf Parray resident of Nowpora Gund Hassi Bhat, Arif Ahmad Dar son of Mohammad Akbar Dar resident of Gund Hassi Bhat near J&K Bank and Raja Mehboob son of Mehboob Hussain resident of Gund Hassi Bhat took advantage of the area and assembled here and raised pro Azadi slogans.
Police has formally registered a case under FIR No 177/2020 U/S 13 ULA(P) Act ,143,188,269 IPC against the above accused.
“However midnight raids were conducted in which two persons have been arrested and further arrests are expected in the said case and the investigation is going on”, spokesperson said. (KNS)
