Massive Raids Conduct on sale of illicit Cigarettes in Srinagar City

Srinagar, 31 march (KNS) :The Civil Society Members in coordination with Food Safety Department, government of J&K on tuesday conduct massive raids in the city centre including Kashmir University area , Dargah Hazartbal, Lal Bazar , SMHS Hospital area and other locations in downtown area of srinagar city. 

According to Kashmir news Service, the Srinagar District stands at number one on the sale and consumption of cigarettes as per the servey of 2019.

Mir Hilal Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety Department government of J&K was heading these raids along with the Food Safety officers and some volunteers from
Civil society. 

During the raids Illicit cigarettes which include the brands like WIN , ESS and others are mostly sold without rules & regulation and specified warnings and we have been able to seize these cigarettes worth more than 50 thousand besides other products related to tobacco . He added that the campaign will continue to end this menace in srinagar city. 

The team also made various challans to the shops who are trading in illicit cigarettes and gave strict warning to other shopkeepers as well who are in the business of cigarettes. 

Commissioner Food Safety J&k Mr Shakeel ur Rehman is himself monitoring the overall situation of illicit trade of cigarettes and other tobacco products in J&K.

Pertinent to mention that Jammu and Kashmir is implementing the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA) even though Kashmir is on the top of the Smoking consumption list and also for the sale of illicit smoking.(KNS)
