`China quake death toll could hit 50,000`
Luoshui Town(China) May 15: China warned the death toll from this week`s earthquake could soar to 50,000, while the government issued a rare public appeal Thursday for rescue equipment as it struggled to cope with the disaster.
More than 72 hours after the quake rattled central China, rescuers appeared to shift from poring through downed buildings for survivors to the grim duty of searching for bodies — with 10 million directly affected by Monday`s temblor.
The confirmed death toll reached 19,509, up from the nearly 15,000 confirmed dead the day before, according to the Earthquake and Disaster Relief Headquarters of the State Council, the country`s Cabinet. The council said deaths could rise to some 50,000, state TV reported.
In Luoshui town — on the road to an industrial zone in Shifang city where two chemical plants collapsed, burying hundreds of people — troops used a mechanical shovel to dig a pit on a hilltop to bury the dead.
Police and militia in Dujiangyan pulverized rubble with cranes and backhoes while crews used shovels to pick around larger pieces of debris. On one sidestreet, about a dozen bodies were laid on a sidewalk, while incense sticks placed in a pile of sand sent smoke into the air as a tribute and to dull the stench of death.
The bodies were later lifted onto a flatbed truck, joining some half-dozen corpses. Ambulances sped past, sirens wailing, filled with survivors. Workers asked those left homeless to sign up for temporary housing, although it was unclear where they would live.

Pakistan hopes for progress on Kashmir issue in next round of talks with India
|
Islamabad May 15 (APP): Pakistan Thursday said there was no proposal under discussion on the division of Kashmir and hoped there would be progress on the core issue during the forthcoming round of Pakistan-India Composite Dialogue next week.
“There is no negotiations on division of Kashmir between India and Pakistan,” Foreign Office spokesman Muhammad Sadiq in response to a question at a weekly briefing.
“We are committed to the peace process and seek peaceful resolution of all issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.”
He said the ministerial level review of the 4th round of the Pakistan-India Composite Dialogue will be held here on May 21 between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries. The Foreign Ministers review meeting will be preceded by the Foreign Secretary level meeting on May 20.
The spokesman said the talks will be held on the eight agenda items of the Composite Dialogue including Peace and Security including CMBs, Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, Wullar Barrage, Terrorism and Drugs Trafficking, Economic and Commercial Cooperation and Promotion of Friendly Exchanges.
The review meetings, he said, will help the two sides to assess the progress made in the 4th round of the eight segments of the Composite Dialogue process and deliberate on how to address the outstanding issues in a more meaningful way. |

Kashmir: Occupied, Partitioned and Disputed
by Vinicius Souza, Caros Amigos, São Paulo
While New Delhi’s population tried to escape from a 40ºC heat by slipping into air-conditioned shopping centers some 400 miles to the southeast, we gazed upon a cold drizzle through the open third floor window of a building without energy in the middle of Srinagar,

Human Dignity vs. Identity-A tale of a valley in distress!
By K.Asif
Kashmir, a disputed area on the map of the world, is being constantly ruined by the most dragged term here ‘Dialogue’. Once called as the ‘Paradise on Earth’- the vale has more to render in terms of innocent killings, human rights violations and violence. There was a time when Angels would fly over the sky but now demons have taken over.
