Handwara villagers decry lack of drinking water

Handwara, July 11 (KNS): Residents of Batpora and Yaroo village of Langate in north Kashmir’s Handwara on Saturday are up in arms against the “jal Shakti Department” division Handwara for failing to provide them potable drinking water.
The residents of these village told Kashmir News Service that ten years back a new water supply scheme was started for the area but was abandoned by the jal shakti department mid way; leaving large number of people to suffer .
They residents of the area said the despite completion of a part of work on the scheme it had not been made functional.
They complainrd that they are being forced to drink the contaminated water.
The residents also alleged that the bills of the work have been withdrawn without completing the scheme
They said that last time they have staged a protest demonstration in Langate main market and at that time they were assured of water supply in the area through PHE water tank but the water tankers come once in a week, the residents said and added that single water tanker cant cater the whole village.
However when KNS contacted to Executive Engineer Jal Shakti Divison, he said he has joined recently and he will look into the matter (KNS)
