Srinagar, March 04 (KNS): The Union government has extended the term of delimitation commission by one year even as it has excluded the north-eastern states from its mandate.

In a notification, a copy of which is with news agency KNS, ministry of Law and Justice said that the commission shall carry out the delimitation exercise in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir only while omitting the North-Eastern states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Delimitation Act, 2002 (33 of 2002), the Central Government hereby makes the following amendments in the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), number  SO 1015 (E), dated the 06 "March, 2020," the notification reads.

It further reads that in the said notification, in the opening paragraph, (a) the words and the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland shall be  omitted. 

"For sub-paragraph, the following sub-paragraph shall be substituted, namely-the State Election Commissioner, the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In paragraph 2, for the words 'one year' the words 'two years' shall be substituted and in paragraph 3, sub-paragraph (ii) shall be omitted," the notification reads. 

The commission’s term was coming to end on March 5 this year. (KNS)
