Director Horticulture tours Walnut Nursery Zawoora


Srinagar September 14: (KNS) Director Horticulture Kashmir Mr. Ajaz Ahmad Bhat KAS today made an extensive tour of Walnut Nursery Zawoora established at a cost of Rs 498 Lac over a period of three years. This Nursery is specifically dedicated for the production of Budded/Grafted Walnut plants for which 20 High-Tech Poly Green Houses have been established. The initiative has been taken by the Horticulture Department after taking note of the decline in the Walnut production. Walnut is highly acclaimed produce of the UT, which over the years could not grow due to non-availability of quality planting material. In order to increase the production of quality plant material, Department has established three Walnut Nurseries and one Almond Nursery in the valley. Around 30,000 seedling have been produced in the Nursery which shall be grafted during coming season and it is expected that in the year 2022 around 20000 Grafted Walnut plants shall be made available to growers for plantation. Director Horticulture instructed the staff posted in the Nursery to work with zeal and ensure that 100% targets of Plant production may be achieved otherwise strict action shall be initiated. Enroute back Director Horticulture inspected Centre of Excellence Zawoora, being established under MIDH and directed the executing agency entrusted with the job of establishment of COE to complete the work within timeline so that stakeholders get benefitted. He further directed that Walnut variety chandler and Almond plants already imported are less in Number and more plants should be imported keeping in view the revival plan of these fruit crops.(KNS)
