Hold assembly elections, continuing bureaucratic system would distance people from mainstream: Vakil

Jammu, March 08:(KNS)  Senior vice president People’s Conference (PC) and former minister Abdul Gani Vakil slammed central government move for delaying delimitation commission process by more than a year as it would definitely add more miseries to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement to "Kashmir News Service" Vakil said it is unfortunate that central government has deliberately delayed the delimitation process in Jammu and Kashmir to benefit the ruling party at Centre. Such decisions are proving disastrous for the region and would alienate people from mainstream.

The senior leader said present administration has failed to address the genuine demands and grievances of people, conducting elections on time would have bridged the gap but unfortunately centre is pushing J&K towards authoritarian rule.

Vakil stressed that let the administration complete the delimitation process within time-bound program of 6 months if they are serious to give a popular government to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Continuing bureaucratic system, not in interest of people as they are not directly accountable to the people. Elected representatives are more accountable and bound to listen to the grievances of people.

“It is astonishing and one is yet to understand why  largest democratic country like ours in this world is depriving the people of J&k to elect their representatives. Holding assembly elections in J&K will help to strengthen democratic institutions,” which at present are at the verge of collapse.

Holding assembly elections would close the mouth of those forces who are bent upon to defame the government at centre for curbing democratic rights in J&K Vakil added.

“Even lofty claims of development are restricted to papers only. Every sector is collapsed nothing has been done for the people who are struggling to with poverty, price rise, and unemployment,” he said.

Vakil said people have been hearing for long that youth will be provided employment opportunities but nothing has been done in this direction so far and even thousands of daily wagers working in government departments since decades are not regularized, and even deprived of their wages for months together.

“It is a shame for the government that Aganwadi workers and helpers are deprived of their salaries for months together. If there would have been a popular government, the situation would have been different,” the senior leader added.(KNS)
