DDC B’Pora stresses on scientific, sustainable extraction of minerals from Water Bodies


Bandipora June 09 (KNS): District Development Commissioner Bandipora Ravinder Kumar Tuesday chaired a meeting to provide short term permits to the Department of Geology and Mining for mining purpose to meet the demands for undergoing developmental projects in the district.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Assistant Commissioner Development Abdul Rashid Dass, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sumbal, Dr Bashir Ahmad Lone, DFO Bandipora Shabir Ahmad Bhat, Executive Engineer PHE Abdul Khaliq, Executive Engineer R&B Hamid Ahmad, Executive Officers of Municipal Committees of Bandipora and Sumbal, representatives of NHPC and GREF and other senior officers of the district.
The meeting discussed threadbare the issues with regard to the short term permission to be granted to the department of Geology of Mining for extraction of construction material from different streams and rivers of the district to meet the demand of the same in different developmental projects ongoing in the district.
During the meeting the department of Irrigation and Flood Control, Department of FIshries and Pollution Control Board put forward their condition with regard to the extraction and urged that the eco system of the water bodies should not get disturbed due to extraction besides taking care of the embankments of the water bodies to avoid flooding situation.
The officers discussed the mining plan and put forward their suggestions and reservations with regard to the plan. The officers of different departments put forward their suggestions with regard to the extraction so that the work of these respective departments is not effected due to the extraction. The suggestions are to be incorporated in the mining plan so that the works of several departments and the general public at large is not affected.

Speaking on the occasion Deputy Commissioner Bandipora stressed on adopting modern scientific approach for extraction of minerals so that the Eco-system of the river is not affected due to extraction so as to make the process sustainable.
He said the short term permission may be granted to ensure early extraction of minerals so that the government works are not affected owing to the shortage of raw material. He directed the Department of Geology and Mining to strictly follow the guidelines and taken care of all the technical suggestions given by department of Fisheries and Irrigation and Flood Control besides following other guidelines.
Ravinder Kumar said the unscientific excavation may have adverse impact on ecosystem of water bodies and need of the hour is to extract mineral in sustainable and scientific manner. He impressed upon the concerned to work proactively to protect water bodies from illegal and unscientific excavation.
