Civil Contractors welcome abolition of Self Help Group Scheme

Srinagar, Sep 24 (KNS): Scores of civil contractors on Thursday welcomed the decision of the government for abolishing the Self Help Group scheme and termed it a right decision for making the things transparent on ground level.
A senior civil contractor said the self help group scheme had become a ‘nuisance’ for the people who are associated with the constriction business.
Talking about self help groups, he said such groups were formed by around four people but on ground only one among these groups was seen working while the rest of the members of the group would do their business in different states or outside the country. Pleading anonymity another senior contractor said these self help groups had divided departments among themselves on their own and ‘were looting government funds in the names tendered works.’
A statement issued to KNS reads,“These groups would mostly outsource their allotted works to other contractors for their personal benefits. This mechanism resulted in serious issues with the quality of work on ground,” he added.
He said there should be equal rights for both civil and self help group contractors in government allotted works.
“Why are they demanding roll back of this ill conceived scheme when there are well educated people in Civil Contractors business also. They cannot claim to be professionals when they do not work on the ground and instead sell their allotted works to others who have no knowledge of construction works at all,’ said another contractor, while welcoming the government decision against Self Help Groups.
