Handwara, Oct 09 (KNS): Handwara police in collaboration with Shadow of Hope (NGO) on Friday held a day-long Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention at Govt. Higher Secondary School Vilgam in Handwara.
Chief guest of the event was Superintendent of Police Handwara Dr.G.V.Sundeep Chakravarthy-IPS accompanied by SDPO Handwara Fariz Hussain, SHO Vilgam Inspector Mohd Sulieman besides Members of Saya (NGO), Tehsildar Vilgam, Doctors from PHC Vilgam and Tarathpora, Teachers and Students from various Schools, BDC Chairman Vilgam, and the members of Civil Society were also present on the event.
Speaking on the event, SP Handwara said that the issue of drug addiction is a challenge before every State of the country. It is the duty of all stakeholders to join in creating awareness about the illegal use drugs amd the measures to be taken to prevent this menace. He said that substance abuse has affected human rights in every aspect. He also said that the increasing drug users in Handwara, especially among the youth, posed a grave danger. He appreciated the Volunteers of NGO for cooperating Handwara Police in organising Drug Abuse Prevention Awareness Programme, which he said, will prove to be useful in the long run.
On the event the participants demanded for a rehabilitation centre in Handwara to which the chief guest assured all possible help. SP Hadwara said that for the betterment of youth J&K Police always remain on the front and different types of sports events are being organized to divert the youth of the valley towards sports activities so that they can not get involved in any kind of depression which leads them to take the risk of drugs. Recently Handwara Police has organized a Cricket tournament in which 32 teams of Handwara are participating and some other events will be commenced in future for the betterment of youth.
Handwara Police always worked for the welfare of the people and have reached out to the distitute families during Covid19 Pendamic and provided them essential things.
He also said that to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society public cooperation is necessary and stressed upon the participants to share all such information’s related drug supply in the area so that police can act swiftly. He further said that during the year many notorious drug peddlers who had made Handwara a drug hub and were also a great threat to the peaceful environment, have been booked and lodged to jails. Recently Handwara Police had busted a Narco Terror Module and seized Heroine worth Crores from them. He further stressed that the steps to get rid of these social evils need to be taken from our homes and locality. He also said that the drug addict persons need to be counseled as they are also the part of our society. They are the victims not the culprits and need to be treated and counselled likely. He also said that the role of religous preachers would be effective in making the society drugs free.
On the event the members of civil society, teachers and students also spoke and highlighted the causes and consequences of drug abuse and assured their possible support and cooperation for a peaceful environment.
At the end the prizes were distributed among the participants as a token of love and peace.
