Apni Party marks significant performance in DDC results

Srinagar, Dec 22 (KNS): Though the Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) signatories have registered a win at maximum places followed by the BJP; the nine-months-old Apni Party has been able to mark an impressive presence across Jammu and Kashmir in District Development Council (DDC) election results that have been announced so far till this report was filed.

District Election Officer (Deputy Commissioner) Srinagar, Dr Shahid Choudhary informed that results of all 14 DDC constituencies have been declared. As per the final results Independents have been declared winners in 7 constituencies including Srinagar-I, Qamarwari-I, Qamarwari-II, Harwan-I, II, IV and VI while JKAP candidates were declared winners from constituencies Harwan-V, Khanmoh-I and Srinagar-III. Four political parties won one seat each , including , BJP won Khanmoh -II, PDP Khanmoh-III , NC Harwan -III and JKPM Srinagar -II.

In Srinagar Apni Party has won three seats in DDC besides a councilor in municipal elections, there are six independent candidates backed by this party who have emerged as winners in DDC elections from Srinagar.

The electoral arithmetic indicates that the Apni Party is most likely to form the District Development Council in Srinagar in coming days. Pertinently, after winning the recently held elections the Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation has already joined the Apni Party soon after assuming the charge.

In other districts of the valley like in Kupwara, Apni Party has won two seats in DDC elections so far and sources have revealed that the Apni Party had backed six independent candidates who have been declared as winners in the district so far.

“This means Apni Party will have eight members in the DDC Kupwara which indicates that it is most likely the Party may form the Council in this border district,” a political analyst informed.

Another political observer said that the Apni Party has shown exemplary performance in the record time by winning some seats in Baramulla, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Shopian and Anantnag. “There is every likelihood that the Apni Party may form the District level councils in these districts particularly in Ganderbal where it has backed 7 independent candidates who have been declared as winners so far,” a political observer remarked.

In Pulwama and Budgam the Party has faced setbacks and has been unable to kickstart its electoral race.

However, in Jammu province the Party has suffered set-back in its stronghold Rajouri district but at the same times it has performed well in Jammu, Poonch, Reasi and Ramban districts where it is expected to bag a couple of seats in each district respectively.

Of trends available in 108 constituencies in Jammu region by 2 pm, BJP was leading in 53 seats, National Conference 20 seats, Congress 13 seats, Jammu Kashmir Apni Party 4 seats, Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party 2 seats, Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan on one seat and independents were leading on 14 seats.

The polling was held over eight phases beginning November 28 and ending on December 19 as 51.42 per cent of the 57 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the DDC elections, which were largely peaceful.

The DDC elections hold great significance as it was the first major electoral exercise in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 last year in August.(KNS).
