Highway closed due to fresh snowfall, landslides

Srinagar, Feb 21 (KNS): The overnight rains lashed Valley plains while as the higher reaches received fresh snowfall since Wednesday evening. The local Meteorological (MeT) department has predicted improvement in weather conditions from Friday.
Officials in MeT department told KNS that the weather in Jammu and Kashmir would improve from Friday. “There is possibility of more rains at isolated places but overall the weather will improve from Friday,” they said.
Deputy Director MeT, Mukhtar Ahmad told KNS the weather across JK will improve gradually from this evening
Officials in MeT said Gulmarg, Banihal, Jawahar Tunnel and others received a fresh snowfall in this evening, brining the temperature further down.
The plains including Srinagar received intermittent rains during the night and continued till Thursday afternoon.
However, fresh snowfall in Banihal and several landslides in Ramsoo-Ramban sector have led to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Officials told KNS that road was closed after fresh snowfall was experience in Banihal and landslides occurred at many places. They added the decision to close the highway was taken as ‘a precautionary measure’.
"No traffic was allowed on the highway today. Snow and landslide clearance operation was started along Sgr-Jmu highway after improvement in weather conditions,” they said. (KNS)
