Srinagar, May 21 (KNS): Authorities on foiled ‘Eidgah Chalo’ called by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) by imposing restrictions in Srinagar areas while as a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Gani Lone.
The shutdown and Eidgah chalo call was given by JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik on the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq and Khwaja Abdul Gani Lone.
Notably, Mirwaiz Farooq was killed on May 21, 1990 Ab Gani Lone was killed on May 21, 2002 by unknown gunmen.
In wake of the JRL’s call, the district administration Srinagar imposed restrictions in various areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, M.R.Gunj and Safa Kadal Police Stations in the old city, while partial restrictions are in Maisuma and Kralkhud Police Stations in the uptown areas.
A huge contingent of police and paramilitary were deployed in almost majority of uptown and old parts of Srinagar city. Almost all the examination scheduled to be held today have been postponed.
Witnesses said that the government forces had erected temporary barricades on the roads, halting the vehicular as well as the pedestrian movement in the restriction bound areas.
Besides, a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Mirwaiz Molvi Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Gani Lone.
All the shops, business establishments, educational institutions, petrol pumps and other things remained closed throughout the day while as the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
Besides closure of educational institutions, the authorities in Kashmir University and Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) postponed the examinations scheduled for today.
All Kashmir University examinations scheduled to be held on Monday have been postponed,” a varsity spokesman had said, adding that the fresh dates will be announced later.
Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, son of slain Mirwaiz Farooq, Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani continued to remain under house arrest at Nigeen and Hyderpora residences respectively while as the JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik has been taken into preventive custody.
Meanwhile, the train services also remained suspended today as precautionary measure.
Railway officials had told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that the services will remain off the tracks on Monday as ‘precautionary measure’.
Meanwhile, a top police official said that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control throughout the day. (KNS)
