Mirwaiz placed under house detention, Malik detained

Srinagar, Jun 21 (KNS): A complete shutdown was Thursday observed across the Valley against the killing of a senior journalist and ‘Daily Rising Kashmir’ editor-in-Chief, Shujaat Bukhari and civilians in the Valley.
The shutdown was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik against the killing of Shujaat Bukhari and civilians.
Bukhari was killed along with two of his security guards in Press Enclave in Srinagar on June 14.
All the shops, business establishments and most of the educations institutes remained closed throughout the day while the traffic was also thin on the roads.
The call for a shutdown given on Tuesday was deferred by a day in view of the Mela Kheer Bhawani. JRL appealed people to observe complete shutdown on Thursday instead of Wednesday against the killings.
The forces were deployed in large number in the sensitive areas of Srinagar to thwart any possible protests against the journalists killing and civilian killings.
However, the situation across the Valley remained peaceful throughout the day, an official said.
Meanwhile, amid complete shutdown against the veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari and civilian killings in Kashmir, the authorities detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik and put Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house detention on Wednesday night.
It is worth to mention here that the Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani continued to remain under house detention.
Malik was detained today to prevent him from leading any protests against the civilian killings, said a JKLF spokesman.
He said that a police party arrived at the Maisuma residence of Malik and detained him.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) leader said that a police party arrived at Mirwaiz’s Nigeen residence on late Wednesday night and placed him under house detention at his Nigeen residence.
He informed Kashmir News Service (KNS) that the Hurriyat (M) senior leader, Hilal Ahmad War was also placed under house detention.
Meanwhile, the rail services were also suspended as a precaution. (KNS)
