Top Jaish commander, associate killed in Bijbehara encounter: Police

Srinagar, Jul 30 (KNS): Two Jaish-e-Mohmmad militants, including the one whom police said was involved in June 12 fidayeen attack in Anantnag, were killed in an encounter between ultras and security forces in Kathoo, Wopzan, Bijbehra area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the encounter started after a joint team of Army, police and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Kathoo, Wopzan following ‘credible input’ about the presence of militants in the area.

“During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter,” a police spokesperson said and identified one of the slain militants as Fayaz Panzoo, a Jaish commander.

“Panzoo was killed along with his associate in the encounter and was involved in the attack on CRPF personnel at Anantnag town on June 12 in which five CRPF men were killed and SHO Arshad Khan was seriously injured and later succumbed to injuries,” he said and termed Panzoo’s killing a ‘big achievement.’

Reports said authorities snapped the mobile internet services in the district as a ‘precautionary measure.’ (KNS)
