Teetwal, May 23 (KNS): The Army’s Shakti Vijay Brigade celebrated the Teetwal Day at the Line of Control (LoC) Shaan-e- Teetwal stadium here on Wednesday.
Teetwal day is being celebrated on May 23 every year to commemorate the liberation of Karnah Valley from Pakistani raiders in 1948 when the town of Teetwal was recaptured by valiant Indian Army troops.
The battle saw two brave soldiers being awarded India's highest gallantry award the "Param Vir Chakra".
The celebration of Teetwal day is an annual ritual in Tangdar.
The grand celebration this year spanned over ten days, during which several events to include Cricket, Quiz, Volleyball and Cultural Competitions were organised, an Army official said.
The day is observed in memory of soldiers who sacrificed their lives while fighting against raiders in 1948, he added.
“Many important civil dignitaries, including the SDM Karnah and several senior officials of the Tehsil administration attended the celebrations along with the Army and BSF officers. The family members of the awardees were the guests of honour at the event”, officials said, adding “The show Tug of War tournament brought an enthusiastic applause from all. The locals also showcased Gatka, the martial art of the region which was followed by a cultural show by the school children,” they said.
People, from across the line of control, gathered on the other side of the Kishanganga River to witness the celebrations and festivities on the Indian side. (KNS)
