Srinagar, May 24 (KNS): Residents in Srinagar’s Peer Bagh area are aghast with the “illegal encroachment” of state land by a few persons and conversion of agricultural land into commercial and private construction.
The residents of Nadir Gund locality in Peer Bagh said that hundreds of kanals of State land is being encroached upon, while conversion of agricultural land goes unabated.
“The illegal encroachment of the State land has taken place at a number of areas of Nadir Gund, Peer Bagh and Humhama areas and the illegal practice is going on from several years. The revenue officials are hand-in-glove with the encroachers,” they alleged.
They said that even as few dozen kanals of land was retrieved by concerned authorities but the land mafia active in the vicinity “is trying to grab the land”.
“From last three days a fleet of tippers is filling this recently retrieved patch of land during night in Nadir Gund,” they said.
They said the agricultural land is fast shrinking due to construction of residential houses and other commercial establishments. “The constructions are going on behind PHQ on agricultural land this time,” said the locals, adding that the situation is same around Humhama Railway Track.
They said that Land Revenue Act and other laws empower the authorities to stop the conversion of the land and take action against the violators which they are not doing.
Tehsildar of the area, Nusrat Qureshi, told KNS that the residents should complain in her office before going to media.
“I don’t tolerate encroaching of the land. The residents should come up to my office with a complaint and I will look into their complaint,” Qureshi said. (KNS)
