Roads leading to Handwara town in dilapidated conditions

Srinagar, Dec 21 (KNS): The roads leading from several areas of Handwara to the main town are in dilapidated conditions despite being macadamized recently.
Local residents told KNS that passengers were facing huge problems due to the bad condition of roads. The drivers deny to ply on Handwara-Magam road as they say their vehicles get damaged due to bad condition of the road.
The residents of Haril said the road was macadamized just months before but it is full with potholes. “The travel on the road is time consuming and daily passengers complain of back pain due to dilapidated condition of the road,” they said.
Another resident from Batagund, Nazir Ahmad told KNS the condition of the Langate- Batagund road was good before the PMGSY department started the repair of it some two years back. “They did 20% of the work on the road and then abandoned it. The road got narrow at various places as they left the gravel on the roadside,” he said.
Similar, are the complaints of residents of Mawer who said most important road from Handwara to Mawer is in shambles. “The work on the road was started 11 years ago but it is still incomplete. We face huge problems due to blockade of the road,” they said and added the work on few roads in the area was started last year, but unfortunately the contractors left the work midway after digging.
The residents of Chountipora also said that the road upto Cinema Bypass was macadamized years before but there are hundreds of potholes on the bypass. “We approached the concerned officials several times but they only gave assurance The PMGSY department has failed to complete any road in the area,” they alleged.
An official of the R&B department told KNS that due to prevailing situation in the valley the major roads in the area were not macadamized. “Now as the winter has already started, it is not possible to macadamize roads as it needs high temperature,” he said.
An official of PMGSY department refused all the allegations and said the roads in the area will be repaired soon. (KNS)
