Blinded for life, Insha now sees hope

Srinagar, Mar 21 (KNS): Insha Mushtaq, a teenager girl from South Kashmir’s Sedhu village, who lost both her eyes after hit by pellets is finally back to schools. Insha got admission in DPS Srinagar Special Education Needs (SEN) department.
Insha, 16-year-old girl now represents the tragic landscape of Kashmir. Insha was among the youngest victims of pellets fired by security forces. She was hit by pellets on the evening of July 11, 2016, three days after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed.
Insha Mushtaq, on January 10 qualified her Class X examinations matriculation examination through J&K State Board of School Education.
After 20 months, Insha joined the school on Wednesday “Since morning I have been receiving congratulatory phone calls after the news about Insha’s Admission spread,” Said Insha’s father Mushtaq Ahmad.
He adds that the entire family is really happy for Insha.
“First six months, she will have to go through a training session where she would be fully trained in the art of Brail system, computers, and English language and then only she will be in a position to sit in classes,” Mushtaq told KNS.
Delhi Public School in Srinagar in the only school in entire Valley that offers education to specially-abled children. In January 2012, after two teachers from DPS were sent by management to New York to get trained and equipped with modern techniques used to teach special children.
“SEN unit has a focus to make specially-abled students computer savvy so that they are not left behind in any way. The idea behind the working of SEN is that education provided should be child-centric, activity-based using kinesthetic approach,” The DPS official said.
He added that they use software’s like Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA)- free “screen reader” which enables blind and vision impaired people to use computers. It reads the text on the screen in a computerized voice. You can control what is read to you by moving the cursor to the relevant area of text with a mouse or the arrows on your keyboard.
Center for Peace and Justice - an institute working to assist and help rehabilitate victims of violence in J&K is instrumental in the educational rehabilitation of pellet victim Insha Mushtaq.
“First Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti assured her full support and later Shabir Ahmad Shah but nothing fruitful happened. We at CFPJ made sure that Insha gets her education properly,” Director CFPJ told KNS.
Insha was blinded in both her eyes, aside from confronting a long trial of recuperation from brain hemorrhages and skull breaks. The doctors treating her described her case as "the worst we have ever seen". (KNS)
