Srinagar, Sep 19 (KNS): Even as the district administration imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts, the authorities on Wednesday foiled the Muharram procession that was scheduled to start from Guru Bazar and would end at Dalgate area of Srinagar.
The restrictions under section 144 CrPC were imposed by the authorities in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batmaloo, Shergadhi, Karan Nagar, Kothibagh, Maisuma, Kral Khud, R M Bagh and Nehru Park.
The Shiite mourners were scheduled to carry out a Muharram procession from Guru Bazar here which would end at Dalgate area.
Witnesses said that Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in large number in the restriction bound areas. The forces had erected concertina wires to thwart the vehicular and the pedestrian movement in the areas, they added.
The administration has disallowed the procession since 1990.
Later in the afternoon, police detained scores of Shiite mourners here at Batamaloo when they tried to carry out a Muharram procession towards Dalgate.
The Shiite mourners appeared at several places of Lal chowk and Jahangir Chowk here to carry out a procession and raised slogans in favour of Islam and Karbala martyrs.
Holding banners, the Shiite mourners mostly youth wearing black dress tried to carry out a procession towards Dalgate.
In the meantime, police used batons to disperse the mourners in Lal Chowk and also bundled them in the vehicles and were taken to the police stations.
Notably, on 10th of Muharram – Youm-e-Ashoora –Imam Hussain (A.S) was martyred 1400 years ago in Karbala, Iraq. (KNS)
