Mufti directs police for speedy action in domestic violence cases

Srinagar, Oct 08 (KNS): Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed,Thursday expressed his concern over the growing trend of domestic violence in the state and said that police’s “non- serious approach” discourages victims not to report it.
While replying to the Opposition National Conference legislator Ali Muhammad Sagar’s calling attention notice over the mysterious death of a woman in Khanyar, Mufti said: “Women who face harassment at their in- laws were reluctant to report due to non-serious approach of the police department.”
He said that he did not know how police released the accused responsible for the death of a Khanyar woman. “I don’t understand how police released the accused from the judicial remand. Police should have taken strict punishment against the culprits responsible for the death of the woman,” he said.
He said that women who face harassment do not report most of the times as police have “shown non- serious approach” in dealing with the cases most of the times in the past.
“Police must take speedy action in these cases. Lawyer can also be hired to take exemplary punishment against the culprits of these incidents,” Mufti said. (KNS)
