Handwara, Jul 06 (KNS): The residents of Handwara area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district are facing immense hardships in absence of potable drinking water as the water tanks are lying defunct.

The drinking water tanks installed by the Handwara Municipal Corporation (HMC) at various locations in the town are defunct due to non-maintenance.

The commuters on busy roads of Handwara also complained to Kashmir News Service (KNS) about the lack of proper drinking water facilities in the town.

Lack of drinking water facilities in the town is creating problems for the people, especially for the commuters and daily wage workers, who have to buy water bottles to quench their thirst in absence of the drinking water facilities, locals said.

“A large number of water tanks dispense unclean water thus defeating the very purpose for which these were installed. The mercury is rising with each passing day and many times I have seen commuters looking for water tanks. The civic body should take steps to repair them,” a local resident told KNS.

The residents also said that the water tanks installed years ago lie defunct while new water tanks are being installed. “The money which they have used to make new water tanks could be used to make passenger sheds at new bus stand instead where commuters are facing problems during the rainy days,” they added.
