Police says militants kill civilian in Sopore

Srinagar, Sep 08 (KNS): A militant was Saturday killed while a policeman sustained injuries in a brief encounter that raged between forces and militants in Achabal area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Police spokesman said that the militants in the midnight hours attacked a police picket at Achabal in District Anantnag. “However, the attack was successfully repulsed by the alert jawans on duty at the picket,” police said.
“In the retaliatory action one militant was killed. Besides, his weapon was also recovered from the site of attack,” police said, adding that the slain militant has been identified as Bilal Ahmad son of Abdul Ahad Bhat from Tantraypora Yaripora of District Kulgam.
Bilal as per the police had joined the LeT three months before. “His involvement was also established in a weapon snatching case earlier. He was involved in carrying out terror attacks on the security forces and civilian atrocities in the area,” police said.
However, police said that a cop also sustained injuries during the attack, saying that he was evacuated to the nearby hospital for medical attention.
“The injured cop is stated to be stable now,” police said, adding that from the spot, two cars have been also seized by Police, which were apparently used by the militants.
Police spokesman said that it has registered a case in this regard and investigation in the instant matter is in progress.
Meanwhile, police said that a civilian was also killed by the militants in this afternoon in Bomai area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Police said that the militants fired upon a civilian identified as Hakim-ur-Rehman son of Nizamudin of Reshipora Bomai in this afternoon, saying that in this incident Hakim received critical bullet injuries and was evacuated to the nearby hospital for medical attention where he succumbed to his injuries.
Spokesman said that Police has registered a case in this regard and investigation in the instant matter has been initiated. (KNS)
