Residents express resentment against PDD, demand transformer

Kupwara, Jan 23 (KNS): Residents of Palpora Qaziabad in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday staged a protest against Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to install a transformer in the locality.
Residents while talking to Kashmir News Service (KNS) claimed that they are without the transformer from last two months. The agitating residents raised slogans against the PDD for failing to install the transformer.
Inhabitants of New colony Palpora in this morning assembled on the road and blocked it, which resulted into massive traffic mess in Baramulla-Handwara highway.
The traffic jam created problems to the commuters. It lasted for one and half hour.
Later, traffic was resumed after police intervened and assured that their grievances will be taken up with the concerned authorities.
Social activist Abas Dar, told KNS that despite paying electricity bills on time, the PDD has failed to provide transformer in the locality from last two months.
“We are being forced to go to other villages to charge our mobile phones. We are unable to charge other gadgets. We visited the office of PDD department but nothing was done on ground officials as they never listened to us,” he said.
He further said that their transformer, which had developed a technical snag two months ago, was taken by the officials of PDD for repairing.
However, the officials failed to repair and install it back so far.
A student among the protesters said, during exam time, they studied in the candle light. “Non-availability of electricity has also affected our education as we are unable to study properly during evening hours,” he said.
Despite repeated attempts, Chief Engineer PDD could not be contacted for the comments. (KNS)
