Kashmir shuts on World Human Rights day

Srinagar, Dec 10 (KNS): A complete shutdown was on Monday observed across the Valley against the human rights violations, the call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
The trio had appealed people to observe shutdown today to protest what they called as grave human rights abuses in the valley. Besides, they had also appealed people to stage protests.
The shutdown was called in view of World Human Rights day.
In view of JRL’s call, all the shops, business establishments and other establishments remained closed throughout the day while as the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
Witnesses said that police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strength in old City areas to thwart any possible protests called by JRL.
However, a top police officer told KNS that the situation across the Valley remained by and large peaceful and under control.
Meanwhile, Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) staged a sit-in protest here today to demand the whereabouts of their relatives who have allegedly disappeared in the custody of government forces.
The relatives and family members of disappeared persons assembled at Srinagar’s Press Enclave to demand the whereabouts to their beloved.
Speaking on the occasion, APDP chairperson Parveena Ahanger said the victim families won’t relent until they get their disappeared children back.
“We are fighting from last thirty years, we will keep fight for more twenty years or others will continue this fight but we won’t stop protesting the disappearances of our loved ones,” she said.
Meanwhile, the train service from Baramulla-Banihal was suspended by the authorities as a security reasons.
Officials said that the train services remained suspended today, saying that it will resumed on Tuesday. (KNS)
