Srinagar, Feb 28 (KNS): Kashmir on Thursday continued to observe shutdown for the second consecutive day to protest against the mass raids, NIA raids and legal challenge to Article 35-A.
The call for a two-day shutdown from Wednesday was given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
All the shops, business establishments and private offices remained closed for the second consecutive day. The normal passenger traffic had also come to a grinding halt and private vehicles could be seen plying only in some up-town areas of Srinagar city. Witnesses said the deployment of police and paramilitary troopers were made in strength today to thwart the protests if any. Some of the roads in Srinagar City wore a deserted look today in view of the shutdown called by JRL.
The shutdown call was given by JRL on Tuesday afternoon against the mass arrests, NIA raids and others.
As already reported the NIA teams carried out raids at the residences of seven separatist leaders including the Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq (at Nigeen), JKLF chief Malik (at Maisuma), Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai (at Hyderpora), Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani’s son Naseem Geelani, Masrat Alam Bhat, Shabir Ahmed Shah and Zafar Akbar Bhat.
The NIA in its statement claimed to have seized “incriminating material” during the raids.
Moreover, the mobile internet speed was restored from 2g to 4g today while as the train service from Baramulla to Banihal remained suspended today as well as security reason. (KNS)
