Srinagar, Nov 26 (KNS): Kashmir Valley observed a complete shutdown on Monday o the call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against the 17 killings including militants and civilians in the Valley.
JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in a joint statement issued to KNS had called for a complete shutdown against the killings of about 18 Kashmiris in last three days and injuring ‘hundreds by the indiscriminate use of bullets, pellets and other oppressive measures by forces’.
All the shops, business establishments, Schools and colleges remained closed today while as the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
The attendance in government offices schools and colleges is almost negligible as passenger vehicles are off the roads.
In view of the shutdown call, the authorities had deployed police and paramilitary troopers in Srinagar areas in strength today to prevent any possible protest against the killings.
However, the situation as per officials remained peaceful and under control throughout the day.
Besides, the train services in the Valley were also suspended by the railway authorities as ‘security reasons’.
Officials said that the train services from Baramulla to Banihal were suspended today.
At least six militants each were killed in tow different encounters in South Kashmir’s Anantnag and Shopian districts on Friday and Sunday while as the Shopian encounter also led to the killings of a civilian and an Army man on Sunday, thus taking the toll in two encounters to 14.
Meanwhile, JRL has called for a complete shutdown on Tuesday in the areas going for polls in the fourth phase of nine-phased Panchayat elections, appealing people to stay away from the polls. (KNS)
